Officially summer time.

Strawberry picking.  We tried out a different place this year and it was more of a wild strawberry field.  Sam pretty much just kept falling over, squishing strawberries left and right.  Poppy ate every single strawberry she picked.  I managed to pick 1 quart and then headed back to the strawberry stand and bought every pre-picked berry they had.

...........

Father's day.  Marc and Poppy decided that some kayaking and fishing were in order.  Sammy was prepared for anything and everything...

worm fascination...

peaceful day spent with the most awesome dad I know...

 ...............

"Making potions."  Mixing sand, dirt and water.  Entertainment for these 2 for hours...
(check out Sam's one-eyed smile in almost every picture lately!)

Poppy's favorite outfit in the world.  (from my friend's etsy shop)  I was so relieved it still fit her this year- she would wear this skirt every day if she could...

............

You can find us at the farmer's market every Saturday morning from now til the end of summer.  Poppy loves picking out her own fruit and veggies and meeting up with friends from school...

the last day of pre-k...

The kids did a little recital of the songs they've learned throughout the year.  It was really cute.  Poppy was really into the songs.  A few of the other parents commented on how "intense" and "serious" she was about her singing.  Yes, indeed.

The directors of the school told me Poppy should get the award for being the biggest butterfly.  She started out so quiet and shy two years ago.  She cried for a long time even right up until last summer when we dropped her off.  This year was a different story.  She loved going to school every day to learn new things and make new friends.  She even had her own "bike gang" on the playground...

Sammy was an "unofficial" student in Poppy's class.   Every day he begged me to let him stay and play with the big kids...

Poppy on her first day 2 years ago...

And on her last day...
I cannot even believe how much this girl has grown!!!

............

Have you seen the new Doc McStuffins show?  It is the cutest thing ever and Poppy is absolutely obsessed with it.  She was using all of these make-shift "doctor" toys so we finally broke down and bought her a proper toy doctors kit.

You know summer is near...

when it's the last day of ballet...

ballet recital...

the bluebirds patiently waiting for their turn to go on stage...

...they all did such a great job!  Poppy was in a great class this year and she had so much fun!

family portrait after the recital...

You know summer is near when you go to your first baseball game of the year...

this was a special Star Wars themed baseball game and Sam was in love with his light sabre...

You know summer is near when you hit up the beach for the first time of the year...
We packed up and were at the beach, in Canada, by 9am on Monday morning.  It looks a little overcast in this picture, but it was actually beautiful out.  Hot and sunny.  We had a perfect little morning and were back home by naptime.  We plan on making lots of little trips to the beach this summer...

You know summer is near when you're getting your first ice cream truck purchase of the season...

So far it's looking like it's going to be a great summer!

kayaking

We had beautiful weather a few weeks ago so we took our kayaks out for the first paddle of the season.  My parents watched the kids while Marc and I went kayaking in Buffalo Creek.  It was really neat to be able to see the old abandoned grain elevators up close...

After a nice 3 hour trip, I was ready to disembark and go pick up the kids in time for lunch.  But when we pulled up to shore, Marc started chit-chatting with a few passing kayakers.  As they were chatting about how many water snakes they've seen along the shore, I decided to take it upon myself to reach over to a log and get myself out of my kayak.  As you can see by the following picture, that maneuver didn't go so well.  I couldn't quite reach the log and my kayak tipped one way and then the other and then ultimately tipped me into the most disgusting pile of muddy sludge imaginable.  I screamed and jumped up and ran to the shore.  My flip-flops were sucked into the goo and are gone forever.  This picture does not even do the disgustingness justice.  It was gross.  I sat in my underwear while we drove home, trying not to think about the bacteria and diseases that probably lay in that water.  Needless to say, I learned a few lessons that day.  Such as always bring extra clothes, there are snakes in Buffalo?, wait for Marc to help me out of the kayak, etc.

..............

After a day spent scrubbing myself clean in the shower, I was ready to get right back out there and this time we took the kids to Beaver Island park.  This was our first time taking Sam out in the individual kayaks.  I was a little nervous about him, but he did great!

A passing kayaker told us about a neighboring island (Motor Island) that was home to a colony of great blue herons finishing up their nesting season.  There were two huge trees filled with huge nests and tons of baby herons squawking away.  It was really neat to see.  And definitely something that we wouldn't have been able to see from land.

Poppy was so excited that she happened to bring her new bird field guide with her.  As soon as we saw the great big herons on the island, she began looking them up in her book and she was so excited that they were in there.  Both Poppy and Sam had a great time...

We're all looking forward to more fun kayaking adventures this summer!
